Poor investment performance can result from a combination of:

  • unanticipated market and competitive changes,
  • leadership deficiencies and inadequacies,
  • personal and organizational cultural barriers to success,
  • infrastructure project delays and cost overruns.

The root causes of underperforming initiatives are one or more of the following:

  1. Management Capital - Enterprise executives may lack the leadership and other capacities needed to instill the Entrepreneurial Spirit.  They: a) cannot discern and articulate a compelling call to action for change; b) lack the capability to envision and lead a sustainable, transforming course of action; c) cannot call forth the intention, will, and energy needed to focus, align, and sustain action; and d), lack the resiliency and creativity to overcome failures and unforeseen barriers to success;
     
  2. Organizational Culture and the People - Since the organization is not imbued with the Entrepreneurial Spirit, it is locked into past assumptions, beliefs, practices and inertia. Consequently, managers, supervisors and other employees are unable to create enough new value.  They fail to take entrepreneurial action, improve and innovate to reduce costs and increase efficiency and productivity. Indeed, they often oppose and actively undermine entrepreneurial action
     
  3. Readiness - The enterprise is not prepared for success, in that it lacks the capacities and capabilities to cohere and sustain alignment of intention, focus, energy and action to develop and transform the enterprise.
